Breaking Barriers: Challenges in Adopting Energy Efficiency in Tirupur Apparel Facilities

Dear Friends and Readers,

In the journey of empowering people on sustainability, we recently conducted a quick survey among the 100 sustainability professionals working in the apparel fashion supply chain in the Tirupur Apparel Cluster. The findings are presented here. This article details the findings and lists the connections and recommendations at the end.

The Tirupur apparel industry faces significant hurdles in adopting as well as projecting best energy-efficient practices implemented, This analysis of industry challenges among the 100 professionals reveals that financial constraints, lack of awareness, and limited knowledge about available support mechanisms are among the top barriers as perceived by them. In a nutshell, when it comes to MSMEs, the “priority” matters.

This survey was carried out by VRNC in a program organised by Fairtrade India at TEA Tirupur under the Switch Asia program to promote sustainability in the cluster supply chain. Pre- & post-session interactions revealed that the session gave a lot of insights to the participants.

The Investment Dilemma

At the forefront of the challenges is the lack of funds for investment, with 35% of respondents identifying it as the primary barrier. Apparel manufacturing, a cost-sensitive sector, often struggles to allocate resources for energy-efficient upgrades due to immediate operational expenses and unstable market pressures.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap

The second biggest challenge, cited by 25% of respondents, is the awareness and experience of staff. Energy efficiency measures require skilled personnel who can implement and manage them effectively. Without adequate training and awareness, even the most advanced technologies fail to deliver their potential benefits.

Adding to this is the lack of knowledge on schemes and support programs (21%). Governments and organizations worldwide offer incentives and subsidies for energy-efficient initiatives, but a significant portion of the industry remains unaware of these opportunities. Bridging this gap through structured training programs and awareness campaigns can unlock untapped potential for sustainability.

The Role of Leadership and Internal Motivation

Leadership commitment is crucial for any transformation. However, management commitment (17%) remains a challenge.

Decision-makers need to prioritize energy efficiency as a strategic goal rather than viewing it as an optional add-on or considering it as business as usual.

Further down the list, challenges such as insights on opportunities within facilities (12%) and motivation (9%) indicate that even when solutions exist, industries struggle to recognize and act upon them. This calls for better benchmarking, case studies, and real-world examples to inspire confidence and drive adoption.

Behavioral and External Barriers

Behavioral resistance (6%) and lack of vendor support (5%) show that external ecosystems and internal mindsets play a role in slowing adoption. Vendors supplying machinery and materials must align with sustainable goals, offering solutions that facilitate rather than hinder energy efficiency improvements.

Interestingly, factors such as unstable business conditions (1%) suggest that while economic instability is a concern, it is not the leading deterrent. Instead, most barriers are internal and solvable through awareness, investment support, and leadership commitment.

The Way Forward

To drive energy efficiency in the apparel sector, a multi-pronged approach is essential:

Financial Support Mechanisms: Access to low-interest loans, grants, and subsidies information must be made more transparent and accessible.
Capacity Building & Training: Equipping factory resources with knowledge and technical skills can create a workforce that actively supports sustainability goals.
Leadership Involvement: Business owners and managers must integrate energy efficiency into their strategic plans, recognizing the long-term financial and environmental benefits.
Collaborations & Vendor Support: Industry-wide collaboration with vendors, government agencies, and NGOs can accelerate the transition to sustainable practices.

The data highlights that while challenges exist, they are not insurmountable. The Tirupur apparel industry can move toward a more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable future with a structured approach.

Projects like WWF’s Noyyal River Basin Program & Fairtrade’s Sustainability Evaluation in the Tirupur Cluster are playing a crucial role in creating grassroots awareness and impact among the stakeholders.
